Tonny A. performs Version of Me at Le Grand Hospice, Brussels, May 08th - 10th, 2025

Picture
I'm very pleased to announce I'll perform my dance piece in Brussels at La Chapelle du Grand Hospice for three nights in May 08th, 09th & 10th 2025:

"London-based French performer and live artist Tonny A. comes with his new dance performance, Version of Me, to le Grand Hospice on the 08th May 2025 for three nights.

Set in La Chapelle du Grand hospice, Version of Me is a sensual, physical and sensorial self-portrait mixing butoh, dance improvisation and performance art.  Conceived and performed by Tonny, this 60’ solo piece dissects, questions and ultimately recompose a fractured picture of the nature of self.

Tonny says: “Exploring my identity and my physicality is one of the constant themes in my work. With this piece, I’m looking into it from the inside, trying to tap into hidden areas of my body, into my senses, into my personal vision of my place in society, in the current artistic landscape to come face to face with the nature of myself. It’s not a revival. It’s not a plea. It’s survival.”

Tonny A. is a performer, dancer and live artist who makes live performances at the margins of dance, physical theatre and performance art. Through his work, Tonny is interested in pushing the conventional aesthetics of masculinity and in subverting the traditional codes around the representation of the (male) body.  After performing his work for many years primarily in London, Tonny has recently branched out on a more international level. Having performed at Tic Tac Art centre in Anderlecht, last Autumn, Tonny A. is thrilled to return to Belgium to perform at le Grand Hospice to share his first full-length piece in a decade and to build a further connection with Brussels’ cosmopolitan audience.
About Tonny A.’s previous works: “A show so unique and both visually stimulating and thought-provoking” (Afridiziak on Women in Me)

My short dance film Sweet Melancholy will be shown at Cinema Nova (in Brussels) as part of their Open Screens platform.
Sweet Melancholy is an ode to personal freedom. It was made during the Covid-19 Pandemic as a way to confront and exorcise the feelings of uncertainty, internal anxiety and irrelevancy both as a human being and artist that I was carrying at the time by embracing and celebrating the moments of joy I could find or create.

Thursday 1st May 2025
Open Screen
Cinema Nova
Brussels, Belgium
Evening start at 8pm (GMT)
Free Entry

I'll be performing a new expanded version of my dance solo at Midgitte Bardot's Personal Spot, at Peckham Levels.

"Our regular night to showcase work from the cutting edge of London's underground performance and art scene is back for another beautiful, messy and full-throated season of entertainment." (PL)

Midgitte Bardot's Personal Spot is an evening of drag, performance art, radical weird stuff, liberation from today’s costly world, and a place for performance to buffer and polish. The evening combines the all-singing, sometime-dancing, spirited chaos of Midgitte Bardot with some special guests from the worlds of Live Art, dance, drag, music, and radical hoo-ha.
Midgitte Bardot’s Personal Spot returns for its second season on Thursday 10th April with the eponymous powerhouse Midgitte Bardot, the punky loudmouth Ms Sharon Legrand and darling danseur Tonny A.

Movement Improvisation Workshop, February 09th, 2025

"What does it mean to be Present? What does it mean to be Here in the Room? And how do we let this inner state guide our movements and flow? "
This 3-hour dance workshop focuses on movement improvisation and abstract composition. We’ll be using our understanding of presence and spatial awareness as stimuli to create moments of improvisation that will allow us to experiment with the physicality of our bodies in motion.

Through a variety of tasks  and exercises, we’ll be encouraged to tap deeper into our imagination and our personal perception of our surroundings. As well, there'll be short moments to exchange our thoughts on what we’ll be experiencing.

This workshop is open-level for professional dancers, actors, performers of any background interested in exploring their own creativity and physicality through movement improvisation. The workshop welcomes up to a maximum of 15 participants and places are limited.
The workshop starts at 2pm. Doors will be open 15 to 20 minutes before for individual warm up.

Tower Hamlets Black History Month Photo-Open Exhibition 2020
Picture
I'm thrilled to take part in Tower Hamlets Black History Month Photo-Open Exhibition 2020.
Two photos from my ongoing collaboration with fine artist and photographer William Wilcox and of my durational piece The Drumming Experience of OneSelf at SPILL2018, taken by Christa Holka, will be on display among other works from a variety of photographers for the whole month of October.
The dynamic online exhibition comments on black lives past and present and the issues that confront them, creating a collection of photographs which deal with themes of identity, gender, body representation and community.
The exhibition is free and can be seen here.

Walking into Being - Improvisation Workshop (February 09th, 2019)

Picture

I'm leading a new Movement Improvisation workshop on Saturday 09th February 2019 at CDS, Walking into Being:

What does it mean to be Present? What does it mean to be here in the room? And how do we let this inner state guide our movements and flow?

Walking into Being is a 3-hour movement improvisation workshop which aims to explore and experiment with the concept of Presence.
Going back and forth between feeling active and passive while in constant motion, we will (physically) walk through various states of being - fluctuating between speeds, into swaying, extending our limbs, dissecting the surroundings with our gaze, rolling our necks like compasses and ultimately keeping our bodies on an imaginary thin line - in order to connect deeper with our sense of awareness. Awareness of our physical and spatial presence. Gradually through this set of actions, we will also be invited to dive into our inner sensations and to go beyond the known potential of our physical expression. This set of task-based walks will then culminate into a short improvisation towards the end of the session.

This is an open workshop for movement practitioners, dancers and any other performers who are interested in exploring their physicality from inside.
